Bonalu – A Vibrant Display of Tradition and Culture

Neo Geetanjali School was a hub of vibrant festivities as students and staff came together to celebrate the regional festival of Bonalu the event was organised by Telugu Department. The school campus was adorned with traditional decorations, creating an atmosphere that mirrored the cultural essence of Telangana’s famous festival.

Bonalu, is a festival dedicated to the Hindu goddess Mahakali. It involves a series of rituals, including the offering of food (bonam) to the goddess. At Neo Geetanjali School, the celebrations were a blend of these traditional practices with educational and fun activities.

The event commenced with a special assembly where students performed a prayer to seek blessings from the goddess. This was followed by a series of cultural performances including traditional dance forms like Potharaju and Mahakali by Shiva and Tekshika, which are integral to Bonalu celebrations. The students, dressed in colourful attire, showcased their talent and brought the spirit of the festival to life.

Miss Lakshmi Samhitha school’s head girl, Sri Lakshmi, K.Karthika and Kashvika students highlighted the importance of celebrating regional festival. “Bonalu is not just a festival; it’s a reflection of our rich cultural heritage. By celebrating it in school, we aim to instil a sense of pride and respect for our traditions among the students,” They said.

Principal Mrs. Rama Devi Perni shared the history and significance of Bonalu, where students learned about the origins of the festival, its rituals, and its role in the cultural tapestry of Telangana. This educational aspect helped students gain a deeper understanding of the festival beyond its visual and performative elements.

As the day concluded, students and teachers shared traditional sweets and savouries, further enhancing the festive spirit. The Bonalu celebrations at Neo Geetanjali School were not just a festive event but a valuable learning experience that underscored the importance of cultural education in shaping young minds.

The success of the event was evident in the joyous faces of the participants and the positive feedback from staff.
