Telangana Formation Day – June 2

Telangana Formation Day is celebrated every year on June 2 to mark the official formation of the state of Telangana in 2014, becoming the 29th state of India.

Telangana was formed after decades of public movements and political struggles, primarily demanding a separate state for the Telugu-speaking people of the Telangana region, which was previously part of Andhra Pradesh. The demand was based on cultural identity, economic imbalance, and administrative neglect.

The state was carved out with Hyderabad as its capital, which continues to serve as a joint capital for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a period of time as per the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act, 2014.

Significance:

  • It commemorates the long-standing aspirations and sacrifices of the people of Telangana.
  • Celebrations include cultural events, parades, flag hoisting, and honoring individuals who contributed to the Telangana movement.
